Alarm bells for driving licence renewals in South Africa

The Department of Transport has been advised that cancelling the smart card drivers’ licence tender could have dire consequences—with the current card printer on its last legs and a backlog in renewals growing since January. At the beginning of March 2025, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy initiated legal action to block the awarding of a contract for new printing driving licence printing machines following an investigation into the tendering process. Despite the investigation, City Press has reported that the Department of Transport’s lawyers have since advised against cancelling the tender. [TAKE NOTE] No documents, no licenses

 20 June 2024

The licensing office in Wolmaransstad is currently unable to register and license vehicles due to a shortage of face value documents.

Drivers now have to go to different towns to register and license vehicles that are costing more due to traveling.

These face value documents are supplied to the municipality by the Department of Transport

The office can renew driving licenses, but cannot supply temporary licenses.

The station will not be able to provide these services until these documents have been provided by the department.

the department “is dealing with the matter"

Also this affects students that wants do obtain there learners and drivers license especially now that it is school holidays.

No appointments until department have face value papers !

Hopefully this will be resolved soon.

  1. I don't understand why can't they test you for drivers license because you can still test, the only thing is you just not going to get a temporary license to show that you have a license, but you will still be on the system, the first time when you test for your driver license you get you temporary license for free.
You can always go to a other traffic department to issue a temp license then you will pay for it.
Your card will arrive in 3 to 4 weeks then you can collect it at the department where you have tested
